Full-year minimum essential health care coverage? (2018 and prior years)
Anyone who did not have minimum essential health insurance coverage for themselves or their families during the tax year may claim a coverage exemption if they qualify, or may have to pay a penalty, also known as a shared responsibility payment, on their tax return. The payment is calculated on the Shared Responsibility Payment Worksheet located in the instructions for Form 8965.
Under the Affordable Care Act, minimum essential coverage is a health care plan or other arrangement specifically identified as minimum essential coverage.
Taxpayers who did maintain minimum essential health insurance coverage and enrolled through the Marketplace or Exchange may be eligible for a Premium Tax Credit. The premium tax credit is a federal tax credit designed to help eligible taxpayers pay for health insurance purchased through the Marketplace. When enrolling in health coverage through the Marketplace, eligible taxpayers choose to have some or all of the benefit of the credit on their federal tax return.
Health insurance through the Marketplace/Exchange?
Taxpayers who purchased their insurance through the Marketplace will receive Form 1095-A by January 31 of the following year. (Taxpayers can also log in to their account at HealthCare.gov to reprint their form 1095-A if needed.) The information on Form 1095-A is used to compute the taxpayer’s premium tax credit and to reconcile any advance credit payments made on their behalf. If the answer to this question is yes, you must complete Form 8962.
