Entering a Direct Debit on an Amount Due Return

If the taxpayer has a balance due and would like to have the amount automatically debited from their checking or savings account, from the Main Menu of the Tax Return (Form 1040) select:

  • Mark Return Electronic
  • You will then be asked ‘Do You Wish to Enter an Electronic Payment for This Balance Due Return?’
  • If you answer ‘YES’ you will be prompted to enter the Routing Transit Number, Bank Account Number, Type of Account, Amount of Tax Payment, Requested Payment Date, and Day Time Phone Number.
  • Requested Payment Date – After the due date of the return, you must enter the current date or the return will be rejected by the IRS.
