Working with Custom Questions

Custom Questions allows you to add your own questions to the navigation menu within returns. These questions can be made mandatory or optional, and you can print detailed or summary reports listing the answers.

Custom questions have several uses:

  • They can assist tax preparers in complying with Due Diligence.
  • Help business owners ensure preparers are complying with due diligence.
  • Track promotional programs
  • Track marketing campaigns
  • Remind preparers to offer ancillary products.

Creating a Custom Question

To create a Custom Question, from the Main Menu of Keystone Tax Solutions Pro select:

  • Configuration
  • Custom Questions

Select New to create a new question or Edit to modify an existing question.

Example question:

Is this Taxpayer a government employee?

  • Yes
  • No
  • Spouse Only
  • Taxpayer Only
  • Both Taxpayer and Spouse

Step 1

Input the Question that you would like answered.

Step 2

Indicate if the question is required or optional for e-filed returns in the check box next to “Require Answer for E-File?” If checked, the return cannot be marked for electronic filing until the question is answered.

Step 3

Add possible answers to the question. To add answers, simply input the answer into the “Answer Text” field, then click “Add New Answer”.

Step 4

When you are finished with the question, click “Exit”.

Once you have created a Custom Question, a Custom Questions item is made available in the navigation menu inside returns:

Select Custom Questions to display the question(s):

Reporting on Custom Questions

To print a report listing the answers to the Custom Questions, from the Main Menu of Keystone Tax Solutions Pro select:

  • Reports
  • Custom Question Reports

The following report options are available:

Print Totals of Answers for Questions – This report prints to PDF a summary of the questions and number of times individual answers were chosen.

Export Totals of Answers for Questions to Excel – This is the same info as above but in a CSV file suitable for importing into Excel.

Print Answers per Return – This report prints to PDF a list of each question and answer by client.

Export Answers per Return to Excel – This is the same info as above but in a CSV file suitable for importing into Excel.
